La Causa is the first bilingual, multicultural organization
incorporated on Milwaukee's south side for the purpose of early childhood
services to children ages 2-5 years
1984
La Causa begins providing care to infants through a grant provided by
the Greater Milwaukee Foundation
1990
La Causa opens the first 24-hour crisis nursery in Wisconsin for the
prevention of child abuse and neglect
1991
Wisconsin’s first Satellite Homes program for temporary care of children
during parent hospitalization begins
1993
La Causa opens the first bilingual Family Resource Center, offering the first
bilingual Nurturing Program in Wisconsin
1994
La Causa creates the first in-home respite care for children with special
needs
1997
La Causa celebrates its 25th Anniversary
1998
The childcare program is so successful, its hours of operation are
extended until midnight
1999
La Causa is the first bilingual childcare center in Wisconsin to be awarded
accreditation by the National Association for the Education of Young
Children, an honor shared by just 7% of all early childhood programs
nationwide
2000
The childcare center at 809 W. Greenfield Avenue receives the Governor’s
Early Childhood Excellence Award
2001
La Causa constructs the $6 million Child and Family Development
Center at 1643 S. 2nd Street in order to provide year-round
community-based programming, including dual language elementary school
education for an expected 600 children, adult enrichment, and
recreational activities for all ages
2002
La Causa celebrates its 30th Anniversary
La Causa touches the lives of more than 9,000 family members through
the efforts of its 400 employees
La Causa's dual language Milwaukee Public Schools Partnership
Elementary School serves 260 children in K4-5th grade
2003
La Causa's charter school application is approved, and the La
Causa Elementary and Middle Charter School enrolls almost 500 students
in K4-6th grade for the 2003-2004 academic year
La Causa continues to serve K4 children at the 809 W. Greenfield
location through its MPS Partnership School program
2004
David Espinoza resigns as President & CEO of La Causa after 24
years of visionary leadership and committed service.
Hugo Cardona, Senior Vice President for Technical Assistance and
Constituency Support at the National Council of La Raza, becomes La
Causa's new President and CEO.
