History, Vision & Mission
LA CAUSA HISTORY
In the late 1960s, a wave of activism took hold in Milwaukee’s young Hispanic community. There were protests for equal rights, marches for better access to a quality education, and demands for greater representation. In this context, a group of mothers on the south side organized themselves to open a small child care center on Greenfield Ave. on the south side. They named it after one of their favorite slogans: "Que viva la causa," which means "Long live the cause."

La Causa Daycare was fully operational by April of 1972, and was run by an all-volunteer staff, including co-founder Clementina Castro (pictured). La Causa was one of the first bilingual day care centers in Milwaukee, and then cared for only 17 children when it opened.
La Causa has grown by leaps and bounds since its humble beginnings. Today, La Causa serves more than 11,000 clients a year. And while La Causa does much more than just operate a child care center, our commitment to children, youth and families is as strong as ever.
La Causa employs more than 225 committed, quality staff who provide a broad range of family-centered services, such as an Early Education and Care Center, and successful K5-8th grade Charter School, foster care recruitment, mental health treatment services, parenting classes, support groups, and a Crisis Nursery & Respite Center.
